FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: How do you determine shipping costs?

A:  As a consumer ourselves, we know the myriad of sites and catalog companies that you have to choose from to purchase nature products.  We also know the frustration you may experience with some sites that hide their shipping costs until the end of the ordering process or ask you to enter an address to determine shipping for each item you inquire about.  We believe this is an unnecessary inconvenience.  We use what we believe is the easiest method to help you determine your shipping costs.  We have a direct link right on our home page so there are no hidden charges or guess work.  You know up front what your costs are, no matter where you live or what product you need.  You can control all your costs by what you order.  That is why we offer FREE Shipping for all orders where the merchandise (gift certificates excluded) total is over $75.  With over 1500+ different nature products being offered and more added each month, you can do all your shopping under "one roof" with our value pricing.

Some sites will offer FREE Shipping, but have higher prices, some have lower prices on products but add handling fees on top of shipping charges.  Some offer "lowest price guarantees".  Our response is to offer the lowest prices available without gimmicks.  Remember, we are a real retail store with over 16 years of proven service and reliability.  We are not going be to here one day and gone the next.  Web-only businesses can not offer you that guarantee!!

Thank you for choosing Wild Bird Depot.com for your nature store!

Q: What is the difference between "squirrel-proof" and "squirrel-resistant" bird feeders?
A: We believe a "squirrel resistant" feeder means that there are features that make it difficult for critters to monopolize the feeder. A "squirrel-proof" feeder has been designed to thwart the animals from obtaining seed, making it unattractive for them to stick around. Usually this has been accomplished through various methods such as cages, weight-activated perches, or stinging devices. In their interest to sell a product, some manufacturers are a little over-zealous with these descriptions.

We have found the most common misconception is that all squirrels are the same, therefore all feeders are the same. Not so. Grey squirrels are large, excellent jumpers. They can jump 8ft or more horizontally and 5-6ft vertically. Red squirrels are smaller with excellent teeth. They can gnaw through the toughest plastic, if given the time.

Some parts of the country are home to only gray squirrels, so the cages and weight-activated devices should work fine. If you are plagued with red and gray critters, there are a couple of excellent feeders on the market specifically designed with them in mind. You have to ask the right questions to match any feeder to your wants and needs. Don't forget, not everyone has the same wants and desires. Some people want feeders that animals can't destroy. Some customers would prefer squirrels to stay off their feeders all together. Others want to feed all the creatures, with or without wings.

"Water-proof" boots does not mean that you can walk into a lake and have dry feet anymore than "squirrel-proof" means that you locate the feeder anywhere you want, regardless of manufacturer requirements. If you not sure if a feeder is right for your particular situation…just ask. We are not beholden to any maker of wild bird products. We are beholden to you! We would rather lose a sale than lose you. We have done business this way, successfully, for over 8 years.

Q: What kind of wood should a feeder be made of?
A: We like cedar products. Second growth wood products are from trees specifically grown for cutting. This saves the old growth forests from being destroyed for consumer products. Cedar, while more costly than pine, holds up better in all kinds of weather. Like cedar shingles on your home, you can let the wood age naturally and it will turn a Cape Cod gray. If you prefer color, use a water-based stain. Never stain inside a feeder or nest box. Birds prefer muted, earth tone colors, nothing flashy. Each year, the inside of a hopper should be scraped clean and sanded to a new surface. For this reason, our best selling wooden hoppers now contain a removable heavy mesh screen on the bottom. This turns maintenance into a minor chore.
